Skating Ramp Basic Styles

In the 60s, skateboarding became the past time of the young and restless so they thought of a way to create or buy skate ramps. No matter what type of ramp used, every skateboarder's heart would soar when they tried it for the first time.

So here we are almost 50 years later. Millions have experienced the same thrill, and it’s true that skateboarding will never die. Below are some basic types of ramps. They’re great for getting started, and you’ll see them in every skate park in the nation.

Quarter Pipe Ramps

A quarter pipe is half a mini ramp. Two quarter pipes can be placed opposite to each other to form a half pipe or mini ramp, or they can be placed back-to-back to form a spine ramp. When you talk about the best kinds of skate ramps, you have this kind in mind. It is designed for practicing those aerial tricks that skateboarding is so known for. These quarter pipe skate ramps have this rail on the top of the slope which is named as "The Coping."

Half Pipe Ramps

Just like quarter pipe skate ramps, half pipe ramps are like two quarter pipes facing each other to be able to make a vertical ramp. Did you know that in 1975, the half pipe ramps became the famous trademark of pro skateboard competition? Since these half pipes face each other, there is a flat portion in the mid section that allows skaters to gain speed. With more speed, they're ready to hit the slopes. The degree or level of difficulty has been raised since the 70s to the present but still, the basics remain.

Keep in mind that ramps like the quarter and half pipes are really great for developing your skills. They are easy to construct just as long as you have the proper tools. It would also be advisable that if you are just a beginner, try not to complicate your skate ramps immediately. You have to build your endurance and sense of balance to be sure of yourself when you try to defy gravity and progress to back flips and amazing leaps.

Mini Ramp / Half Pipe

A mini ramp is a type of half-pipe which is normally less than 6ft high. Any ramp smaller than this that is not a vert ramp is commonly called a mini ramp. Mini ramps can be as small as 2ft in height. While many ramps this size are designed to be forgiving to beginners, some are built more aggressively, providing a steeper ledge for experienced riders to perfect lip tricks. These ramps are appropriate for beginners as well, though they may find it necessary to work their way up from the bottom, as on larger half pipes.

Vert Ramp

Vert ramps are named the way they are because when you get to the top of the ramp the transition is vertical to the ground. The typical height of a vert ramp is 10-14 feet, with anywhere from six inches to three feet of vert on the top . The vert at the top makes it easier for the rider to catch air on a vert ramp than on a mini-ramp. This is because the vert at the top causes the rider to naturally go straight up instead of forward.
